Thanks Kevin for the kind words. I've been following some of your MonoTouch related discussions of late.

I guess it all depends upon definitions. Back in the day of Pocket PC 2000 the moniker "Windows Mobile" didn't fully exist. That first came into existance with the Pocket PC 2003 release. So yes I was technically using an earlier version of the same OS, but technically it wasn't called Windows Mobile at the time.

My first exposure was actually with one of the forerunners - Palm PC.

Then again I guess to be 100% technically correct we should now simply be referring to "Windows Phone" :-)

Congratulations on the book, I'll add it to my list (I've recently started iPhone development myself).
In the interests of pedantry (and I'm a programmer, so what do you expect?) Pocket PC was launched early in 2000, so arguably Windows Mobile did exist when you started.

Hi Namrata,

In theory your process should work. I haven't done exactly the same thing but have worked on a couple of projects which extract and re-package the contents of CAB files. The process is also similar to that used by Chris Tacke in the blog post I referenced within the article (http://blog.opennetcf.com/ctacke/PermaLink,guid,073453a8-3fb1-4527-8599-f980f46ea6d4.aspx).

My guess is possibly that something was missing from your merged _setup.xml which caused some of the files to fail to be extracted. How did you go about merging the two _setup.xml files into one? If you just copied one of them this would explain why the files and registry settings from the other application did not copy across.

Please feel free to contact me via christopher@christec.co.nz if you would like to discuss this further.

Hi!

Thanks for the great post.. one slight detail though.. I tried to merge the _settings of 2 cabs and copied relevant files.. Sadly though, just one of them is deployed.. I have a sneaky suspicion the SMARTD~1 is to blame.. any thoughts on how to work around this?

Hi Blaine,

This project is essentially dead.

See for example my comment on the following blog post http://www.christec.co.nz/blog/archives/50/comment-page-1#comment-31623

Google now support Windows Mobile out of the box (which was my original end goal). Windows CE support was just a stepping stone, since the web browser available on that platform was a closer fit to the existing code base (i.e. required less hacks or alterations to the browser integration) than Pocket Internet Explorer (PIE) and it allowed me to concentrate on the other changes required (such as cross compilation for ARM etc).

If there is a pressing need I'm sure it would be possible to take Google's code and get it working on "raw" Windows CE devices without too much trouble. There's possibly only a few Windows Mobile specific dependencies that have creapt in, but I haven't kept an eye on it for over a year, so don't know what the current state of the project is.

If there's a pressing need, contact me and we can discuss further.
